(my early July 2008 post)

Smoke on the Water - Ribs for the Red Cross Slated for First Weekend in August in Toledo's Promenade Park

Julie Roberts, Eve 6 Headline Event

Downtown Toledo will be awash with the smell of barbeque as the Columbia Gas Smoke on the Water - Ribs for the Red Cross presented by Key Bank will take place the first weekend of August at Promenade Park.

Scheduled for August 1 through August 3, along the banks for the Maumee River in downtown Toledo, Smoke on the Water - Ribs for the Red Cross features some of the best local and national BBQ rib vendors along with top national entertainment. Admission is just $3; children 12 and under are free. Also, there is free admission on Friday until 5 p.m.

Confirmed rib vendors include:

"The ribs and rib vendors are the stars of our event," says Tim Yenrick, Executive Director of the Greater Toledo Area Chapter. "Smoke on the Water is a great way to enjoy the best ribs from Toledo and the Midwest, all while having a fun, family friendly event in the heart of downtown Toledo."

In addition, an outstanding line-up of local and national talent has been scheduled, including:

Friday, August 1 - Country Day

Her debut CD, "Julie Roberts," went to No. 9 on the U.S. country charts and was certified gold on the strength of singles "Breakdown Here," "The Chance" and "Wake Up Older." Roberts received two Horizon Award nominations from the Country Music Association, a Top New Artist nomination and a Top New Female Vocalist nomination from the Academy of Country Music Awards and a breakthrough Artist nomination from the CMT Awards. Her follow up CD, "Men & Mascara" reached No. 4 on the U.S. country charts.

Saturday, August 2 - Rock Day

A local act that's making it big, Toledo's own We Are the Fury was hailed an "Artist to Watch" by Rolling Stone in 2007. Their full length debut CD, "Venus" was released in 2007 to rave reviews, with Entertainment Weekly calling it a "scorcher," Alternative Press noting it "delivers Ha-uge," and Penthouse giving "Venus" five stars.

California alternative rockers Eve 6 is best remembered for its No. 1 single "Inside Out" off its 1998 self-titled debut CD. The band has scored nine Modern Rock Top 40 singles, including "Inside Out," "Leech," "Open Road Song," "Tongue Tied," "Promise" and "Here's to the Night." Eve 6 is currently working on a new CD.

Sunday, August 3 - Family Day

Toledo's own idol, Candice Coleman-Lange is a singer/songwriter from Toledo, Ohio who was featured in American Idol, Season Two, where she was selected as a Top 32 semifinalist. She is also featured on an internationally-released CD called "Voyces United for UNHCR," an album containing original songs by various selected artists in an effort to raise awareness of the Darfur situation, and to help fund efforts there. She performs in and around Toledo regularly, as well as New York City on occasion.

In addition to the scheduled performers, Family Day features a children's area with games and activities from the YMCA Fun Bus, Imagine School of Arts, Safe Kids Greater Toledo, and Big Smiles.

As a bonus attraction, and for the first time in the Midwest, the Heineken Share the Good mobile beer garden will be set up at Smoke on the Water - Ribs for the Red Cross for the entire weekend. Share the Good is a mobile marketing movement that encourages people to break out of their comfort zone and try new experiences, and in turn, share those positive new experiences with others. Share the Good encourages people to try Heineken Premium Light, and more importantly, share this 'new find' with their friends.
